Medical Team

Tarek Gelbaya
Subspeciality Consultant Gynaecologist/ Clinical Lead     
Mr Gelbaya is an accredited, highly qualified consultant and subspecialist in reproductive medicine and surgery. He is the clinical lead of both assisted conception and endometriosis services at the University Hospitals of Leicester. Mr Gelbaya has a great and long standing experience in management of subfertile couples. He is especially interested in assisted reproductive techniques (such as IVF or ICSI), recurrent miscarriage or recurrent implantation failure and reproductive keyhole surgery including for women with fibroid and severe endometriosis.  Mr Gelbaya is active in research and has published in a variety of highly recognised international medical journals.

Neelam Potdar
Subspeciality Consultant Gynaecologist
Neelam Potdar is a Consultant Gynaecologist and Subspecialist in Reproductive Medicine at the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust. Her qualifications are MS, MD, MRCOG and is Subspecialty accredited by the Royal College of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, London.

Miss Potdar has special interest in Assisted Reproduction, Reproductive Endocrinology (including PCOS, premature ovarian insufficiency and adolescent problems) and Reproductive Surgery (both laparoscopic and hysteroscopic procedures). She has long standing experience in and is accredited for Ultrasound in Gynaecology and Early Pregnancy.

Miss Potdar is research active and primarily interested in Evidence-based Medicine to facilitate implantation, methods for improving IVF outcomes, and life style factors affecting fertility and pregnancy loss. She has presented at various National and International Meetings and published in peer reviewed journals.

She speaks English and Hindi fluently and understands Gujarati.

Mr Girish is a Consultant Gynaecologist with a Special Interest in Reproductive Medicine.

Mr Girish undertook his training in Obstetrics & Gynaecology at University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust and Leicester Royal Infirmary since 1999.

His special interest area includes Reproductive Medicine, Gynaecological ultrasound and Laparoscopic Surgery.

Dr Yadava Jeve

Dr Yadava Jeve undertook his early obstetrics and gynaecology training at Grant Medical College Mumbai, India. He competed MSc in Reproductive Medicine at University of Glasgow. His research was to analyse the role of serum AMH in prediction of ovarian response. His qualifications include MBBS, MS, MSc and MRCOG. He completed his advanced training in subfertility and gynaecological endocrinology at Birmingham Women’s Hospital and completed speciality training in the East Midlands Deanery. He is actively involved in research. He joined Leicester Fertility Centre as a part of RCOG subspecialty accreditation program.

Nursing Team

Cathy Clarkson
Lead Nurse Specialist
Cathy qualified as a registered nurse in 1985 from Huddersfield school of nursing, moving to Leicester in 1987 to work as a staff nurse on the gynaecology ward. Cathy started to work as an infertility nurse with Roger Neuberg in 2000 joining the clinic in 2003 and gaining her qualification as a nurse prescriber in 2011.

Cathy is a highly skilled infertility sonagrapher responsible for the smooth running of the nursing team. She enjoys taking time to get to know all patients to ensure they are well informed and cared for.

Caroline Busby
Nurse Specialist
Caroline joined us as a fertility nurse specialist in 2005, furthering her training by becoming a nurse prescriber in 2010. Caroline's background is in gynaecology nursing, and she brings a unique perspective to the team following her experience working as an infertility nurse specialist in the private sector, as well as having worked for 3 years in the Middle East.

Caroline prides herself in treating patients as individuals, ensuring patient care is at the heart of everything she does.

Janessa Hanley     
Nurse Specialist    
Janessa qualified as registered nurse in 2008 and joined the ACU team in March 2010, having previously worked in neurology rehabilitation. She has been involved in nursing since leaving secondary school and has since achieved a degree with honours in nursing. She has progressed within the unit and is now an infertility nurse specialist with great interest in assisted conception and reproduction.

Janessa enjoys direct patient care, interaction and being able to assist patients through the specialised journey of infertility treatment.

Monique Johnson
Nursing Assistant
Monique Johnson joined the team in 2006 after 14 years experience of gynaecology. She is our most senior and experienced nursing assistant. Her roles in the clinic are to assist the medical team during egg collections, embryo transfers, Hycosy’s and Endometrial Scratches providing support to patients during and after their treatment process.

She is highly skilled at ultrasound scanning and trained at venepuncture.

Carly Elkington

Staff Nurse

Carly qualified as staff nurse in 2004, and has a specialist nursing degree after 12 years of experience in gynaecology, Carly joined the team in June 2016. Her role in the clinic is to assist the medical team during egg collections, embryo transfers, and providing support to patients during and after their treatment process.  

Carly is currently working alongside the nurse specialists and is being trained in undertaking DIs (donor sperm insemination) and IUIs (intra-uterine insemination) on the clinic.

Carly is looking forward to having a more specialist role within the team.

I have always been passionate about fertility and the miracle of life. I am originally from Spain, where I qualified as a nurse and then a midwife, having worked in obstetrics and gynaecology both there and in the NHS. I am excited about joining the team. I am enjoying the process of becoming more specialised and learning from the experts and at the same time assisting people to achieve their dreams. Ana joined the team in October 2017.

Jane Blower - HFEA Person Responsible

Consultant Embryologist and Scientific Advisor EM AHSN 

Jane graduated from Nottingham University with the first UK Masters in Assisted Reproductive Technology. In her substantive role as a consultant embryologist she is responsible for directing and managing the scientific service for the diagnosis, management and treatment of infertility patients at the Leicester Fertility Centre. She is also the Human Fertilisation & Embryology Authority (HFEA) Person Responsible; she was part of the original team who opened the centre in 1989. Jane is a founder member of the Association of Clinical Embryologists (ACE) and sat on the Executive committee for ACE for 6 years. Jane is a member of the quality Improvement group for the IQIPS accreditation programme and has a strong belief in the role of accreditation to improve the quality of services. She is also a member of the NICE evidence update review on fertility group and an HCPC partner. In October 2010 Jane was appointed as Scientific Director to the NHS East Midlands as a part time secondment, offering scientific advice to the SHA, and subsequently HCS workforce advisor to Health Education East Midlands, whilst providing leadership, strategic direction, and influence for healthcare sciences and scientists across the region.

She is also undertaking a part time role providing advice to the EMAHSN and supporting their affiliated projects, including the MRC nodes.

In April 2014 Jane was seconded to a national role as Deputy CSO (acting) for 12 months, in this role she worked closely with the Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) and senior colleagues at NHSE and continues to be actively involved in the CSO work programme working as a clinical associate supporting accreditation of scientific and diagnostic services focusing on leadership, quality, and innovation and commissioning of diagnostics as well as the delivery of seven day scientific services. Her research interests include male factor infertility.

Emma Burrell

Emma is the Laboratory Manager; she joined the Leicester Fertility Centre in 2003 as a trainee embryologist, after completing her degree in Natural Sciences at Cambridge. In November 2005 she finished her training and was awarded her Certificate in Clinical Embryology and her ICSI licence. She went on to become registered with the Health & Care Professions Council as a Clinical Scientist in 2009. Emma enjoys teaching and has been a supervisor for trainee embryologists. She has successfully completed the Royal College of Pathologists’ Part 1 examination in Clinical Embryology and also the British Fertility Society’s ‘Quality Management of a Fertility Service’ qualification. Currently she is a member of the executive committee for the Association of Clinical Embryologists.

Amy Sharpe

Embryologist
Amy joined the clinic in 2003 as a trainee embryologist after completing a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Anatomy and Problems with Mammalian Reproduction. She completed her embryology training and was awarded her license to perform ICSI in 2005 and became a state registered scientist with the Health & Care Professions Council in 2010. She was recognised by the UK National External Quality Assurance Scheme as the top performing embryologist in the UK for embryo assessment 2014 & 2015. Amy is responsible for the coordination of the sperm donor bank.

Charlene Freeman

Embryologist
Charlene joined the team in 2006 as a trainee embryologist after completing her degree in Medical Biochemistry at Leicester University. In 2010 she was awarded her ACE certificate and ICSI licence, and in 2012 Charlene became state registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HPC). Charlene enjoys all areas of embryology and andrology and is an active member of the Association of Clinical Embryologists continued professional development committee and also the NEQAS steering group.

Christina Michailidou-Ahmed

Embryologist

Christina joined the team in 2011, as one of the first Scientific Training Programme trainees in the country.

After completing her degree of BSc in Biology at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Greece) in 2003, she was awarded an MSc in Molecular Pharmacology in 2004 and a PhD in Molecular Cancer Studies in 2009, from The University of Manchester. Developing a keen interest in subfertility, in 2010 she worked voluntarily for the IVF and Infertility Centre at the Interbalkan Medical Centre in Thessaloniki, Greece. Christina then embarked on the Scientific Training Programme (STP), during which she was awarded an MSc in Clinical Science (Cellular Sciences) from The University of Nottingham with distinction. She has completed the STP in 2015 and became a registered Clinical Scientist with the Health & Care Professions Council in November 2015.

Coming from a strong scientific background, where her work has been published in peer reviewed journals, she aims to bring her research experience to her role. Although she enjoys all aspects of her work at the Leicester Fertility Centre, she particularly values working with patients.

Josephine Wooller

STP Trainee Embryologist

Jo joined the Leicester Fertility Centre as an Embryology Practitioner in March 2014 after completing her Masters Degree in Reproduction and Development at Bristol University. Jo is now a Trainee Embryologist on the Scientist Training Programme and is aiming to graduate in 2019.

Jo undertakes embryological procedures including egg collection, IVF inseminations and assists with all embryological procedures. She is looking forward to developing more specialised skills within the team and is particularly looking forward to her training for embryo transfers.

Amanda Derry

Andrologist
Amanda Derry joined Leicester Fertility Centre in 2005. Amanda is responsible for running the Regional Andrology Service and male oncology referrals for cryopreservation of semen.

Amanda brings a great deal of experience from her previous role of 16 years at the LRI as a Medical Laboratory Scientific Officer in clinical and environmental microbiology.

She attained a degree in biomedical science at Nottingham Trent University with merits in bacteriology and parasitology, she is state registered with the HCPC and has recently passed a certificate in biomedical andrology.

Rory Turley 

STP Trainee Embryologist

Rory is an Associate Laboratory Practitioner and joined the team in May 2016. After completing his Bachelors of Science Degree in Forensic Anthropology at Liverpool John Moore's University. Rory worked as a Senior Forensic Scientist in Biology where he gained many transferable and scientific skills.

Rory is now going to begin his journey at the Leicester Fertility Centre as a Trainee Embryologist on the Scientific Training Programme. Rory started the Programme in September 2017 and is aiming to graduate in 2020 as a qualified Embryologist.

Rory undertakes embryological procedures including egg collection, IVF inseminations and assists with all embryological procedures.

Michaela Wyner

Michaela is an Associate Laboratory Practitioner and joined the Leicester Fertility Centre in July 2016 after completing her Masters Degree in Clinical Embryology and Assisted Reproduction Technology at the University of Leeds.

Michaela plays a vital role in the day-to-day running of the Embryology and Andrology laboratories, prepares sperm for treatment and assists with all embryological procedures.

Michaela aspires to become a Trainee Embryologist on the Scientist Training Programme in the future.

Donna joined the team in December 2006 as one of our administrators. She has previously worked on reception and now is the first point of call for all telephone enquiries. Donna uses her excellent communication skills and knowledge to assist patients. She is extremely capable and enthusiastic, providing a warm welcome for patients and visitors.

Debra joined us in 2005 with an extensive background in a variety of commercial administrative roles; she is responsible for the typing of all clinic letters, including those for oncology patients and copying notes. Debra has a wealth of knowledge about infertility and can arrange appointments and investigations and answer any queries patients may have.

Debra enjoys her role and seeing a job well done.

Julia joined the team in January 2011 having previously worked within the hospitals booking centre for over 5 years. Julia has vast experience in the customer service industry. Julia prepares notes for all clinics and assists in the effective running of the administration office.

Being our primary receptionist Julia is likely be one of the first people you meet.  She has an excellent memory and enjoys seeing patients and sharing their fertility journey.

Mo Thomas

Counsellor

Mo has extensive experience working with infertility, which began when she was a Gynaecology Ward Sister aiming to provide holistic care. She understood that the devastating impact of the emotional and social effects of infertility, which create feelings of loss, isolation and anxiety, can be as hard to manage as the physical impact of treatment. She was part of the original team who opened the Centre in 1989, and has subsequently gained qualifications in counselling, psychology and management. Mo is an accredited counsellor with the British Infertility Counselling Association. Mo is also the Centre’s representative for International egg donation.

Craigie Morrison
Quality Manager
Craigie joined the team in December 2015. Craigie has a background of working in Primary and Secondary Care, is trained in Clinical Audit, has undertaken CQC (Care Quality Commission) inspections and been part of the Contract Quality Review process. Craigie also has extensive experience working in Quality for a Leicestershire Clinical Commissioning Group.

Craigie’s role is principally one of modernisation, implementation and maintenance, particularly in relation to compliance with the regulatory quality standards laid down by the HFEA (Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority) and United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS). A priority for the unit is to have the Andrology Laboratory accredited to the ISO: 15189 standard and Craigie will be leading the process on this.

Craigie is a great believer that quality is everyone's responsibility.

Beata Krupczynska - Domestic

Beata has worked on the unit for three and a half years and in the Hospital itself for 6 years. Beata works hard keeping our unit clean and makes sure we comply with infection control standards. She says "here on the ACU is the best place I have worked".

Palo Sandhu

Palo previously worked in gynaecology for 8 years as a clinic co-ordinator and picked up various skills and knowledge. She also has various other extensive administration skills as she helps in other various departments in the NHS regularly. Palo began working at the Assisted Conception Unit in January 2017 as administration officer, Palo is responsible for office administration tasks including, filing, answering telephone queries, checking in patients for appointments and making further appointments directly with patients, entering patient data and results onto the departmental database (IDEAS).
