Embryo Transfer
The procedure takes approximately 15 minutes and patients are able to go home after a short rest. We request that patients have a full bladder during the procedure, as we will carry out an abdominal ultrasound scan to help visualise the uterus.
How many embryos to transfer?
In order to reduce the risk of multiple pregnancies’ and births, the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority instructed all clinics to adopt a multiple birth minimisation strategy. This strategy will vary dependant upon patient medical conditions, but most patients under the age of 35 will be eligible for the transfer of a single embryo. Some PCT’s/SHA’s will only fund the transfer of a single embryo.
Luteal Phase Support
Luteal Phase Support is started after embryo transfer. This is usually given in the form of Cyclogest pessaries.
Frozen Embryos
Embryos may be frozen at any stage but only Grade 1 and 2 embryos are classed as suitable for freezing. Embryos are graded on a scale of 1-4 with 1 being the best. Around two thirds of embryos survive the freeze/thaw process. Frozen embryo replacement can be carried out in a cycle supported by HRT or in a "natural" cycle.
